Mediacorp and IMDA Collaborative Effort on Programmes

To say that Mediacorp and Singapore does not possess any talent is totally incorrect. It needs to be seen in the likes of a fledgling company with ambition trying to wrestle into the regional media space.

Many of the programmes aired are of good quality and the talen pool undertakes programming and acting well. However Mediacorp does suffer from negative perception of being boring and the mouth piece of "G" and thus the regular "joe or jane" consumer would be immediately turned-off when a foreign production is screened at the same time slot.

Programmes that take a dig at the G policies or agnostic of G policies do better. Programmes that have a repeat nationalistic theme of civility and social cohesiveness needs a new look as these seemed recycled and overused with no new angle and the predictability that comes with the particular programme.

Consumers sense a underlining G message that is not that sublime and those that watch these programmes will come away feeling the presence of G .  Foreign programmes based on the same theme do better cos the consumer knows that the production is agnostic of the G. They offer a fresh look at ordinary things in a different setting, for instance the set is in a foreign land and the actors appear more elegant in their attire and mannerism.  Mediacorp slapstick programmes tend to be loud and come from platform of knowledge superiority in a lecturing tone in a manner that feels condescending.  This is actuated  by the IMDA logo at the end of the programme and hence only confirms that it is a public service broadcast to influence and condition the consuming public.

Mediacorp should take a leaf from "Little Nyonya" on it successful programming and distribution.  To many, it is the revival of lesser known culture, the harsh reality of the Nyonya at that time with a realistic ending and engages much more than narratives.  "Tanglin" has also a good production but with IMDA logo.

I for one do believe that Mediacorp can do and has done good work but is doing too much of G bidding.
