Grab Car Driver Experience



Enticed by the Grab Advertisements? Considering Driving for Grab as an option?
Signing with Grab was easy enough you basically have to make your way to Grab office in Sin Ming Lane, approach the counter who will direct you to one of the millennium staffers who then guides you through registration, application form, photo taking, installation of the Grab driver application on your Android phone (Yes, you need an Android phone and a google email account) and to the car rental counter. In the latter, if you do not already have a car. 

If you intent to use your car for GrabCar driving you would need the appropriate insurance and LTA decal. Should you not have the requisites on your car then you can proceed with Grab registration but it will not be possible to use that car as a GrabCar until you have the correct insurance for chauffeur driven and the LTA decal affixed to the car windscreen.

 When the registration is done at Grab, you need to take the simple online test and pass it, you need to screen shot it and forward it to the Grab staffer who will call you on your mobile phone. Submit the passing mark screen shot and pic of the LTA car decal, rental agreement and car log card.   If documents for the car are not ready, no matter, you can still proceed with registering yourself and submitting the test result as a Grab driver leaving car part outstanding.

Step 2: Activation
Activation is free. Documents to bring to GrabCar office include:
o    NRIC
o    Driving License
o    Bank Information – Name, Branch Code, Account Number
o    Android phone
o    From the rental company:
  • Rental agreement
  • Proof of commercial insurance
  • Z10 / Z11 Vehicle Log


Grab has incentives which applies to you with a few permutation, there is some interdependence between all these incentives but all are calculated based on the number of trips achieved by you during the week. 
There are incentives for trips made during morning, afternoon or weekends peak hours;  all adds to the total trip.   These incentives can add up to 50 % in take-home pay for the driver for that week.  However, recent observation suggests that Grab has since consolidated the incentives in a way where it requires higher trip numbers to qualify for weekly incentives, the payout is also lower. The trend then is to stretch drivers to achieve the incentive possibly eventuating to relying only on fares as income while maintaining the ratings pre-requisites of AR, CR, DR, see below.

All considered its great to drive a GrabCar for the experience as you would meet people of different nationalities, professions and demeanours. These incidental social aspects determine the joy of driving. Driver anxiety is directly corelated to the passengers anxiousness to time or routes taken.
It is difficult to say that there is flexibility with GrabCar driving as your AR, CR would be affected and inadvertently your incentives in addition to the vehicle related direct and indirect expenses (parking, summons, accidents, petrol) that needs to be addressed. Also unlike Taxis you will need to pick up all trips as assigned to maintain a high AR.
Before considering GrabCar driving as a full time job you may like to consider some other professional choices since it may not be as stable and lucrative as it appears. Grab them-self is into autonomous vehicles and it will cannibalise the current market GrabCar segment.  Furthermore, weekly reduction in cash incentives with increased of trips per week is already eroding take home income with you being longer on the road. 

My final note is GrabCar driving is great if it is for an incidental income, the experience or if there is nothing else you would like to do.
